The Bentway’s Safe in Public Space initiative is an innovative research project looking into ways to improve safety and comfort at The Bentway site. Located under the Gardiner Expressway in Toronto, The Bentway is a re-visioning of under utilized urban space through creative urban design and site activations. With the challenges to create human connectivity through the pandemic, the housing crisis, and 2020’s spotlight on systemic racial and social injustices, The Bentway sought to broaden definitions and understandings of safety to better support the diverse communities that use their space. This project used interviews, surveying, and temporary art installations to engage the public.

My role in this project was to support with interview and survey analysis as well as synthesize learnings from the entire research project.
